Tenants have their say in the rent freeze!

The Scottish parliament has passed emergency legislation designed to protect tenants hit by the cost of living crisis that will freeze rents until at least the end of March 2023.

As discussions around the rent freeze across the housing sector continue, TPAS Scotland has been in consultation with its members to better understand the driving factors that are keeping these people awake at night! There is a lot of uncertainty across the social housing sector which is causing stress and worry amongst tenants and their communities.

The key concerns amongst TPAS members include;

  • Commitment to improvements and repairs that have already promised to tenants – these may now have to be cancelled
  • Tenants losing their rights to have a say in their rent and consultations
  • Trust may be lost if tenants must abide by rent controls that the Scottish Government impose on landlords and tenants
  • There is the potential for break-down in relationships and communication between tenants and landlords which has taken years to develop.
  • Services will be impacted again!
  • Scottish Government needs to trust landlords as they know what they are doing
  • PRS and RSL/LA’s cannot be categorised together as they are different.

If you have concerns/issues around the rent freeze that you would want us to put in front of the Scottish Government, please email them to leza.lafferty@tpasscotland.org.uk.
