Supporting Tenants Workshop at TPAS Annual Conference

There are some interesting workshops planned for the TPAS Conference later this month.

We recently caught up with Judith Sutherland Director of Housing at Langstane Housing Association about her workshop “Supporting Tenants” which is taking place on Thursday 29th June at 9.15am.

Langstane Housing Association is a unique organisation.  Back in 1977 it was recognised that living conditions in the  old lodging houses in Aberdeen were poor and that single people in particular required self contained accommodation.  Langstane was formed from purchasing tenement blocks and with government grants refurbishing properties.  64% of the housing stock remains one bedroom properties and Langstane has been on a journey since to support their tenants via different tenancy models and methods.  Many of the individuals they are supporting are vulnerable often emerging chaotic lifestyles.

In her workshop Judith will lead an interactive and lively discussion around how they have supported these tenants alongside their partnership agencies.  One area Judith will touch on will be the support they have provided to homeless people.  Through the homeless prevention funding from Scottish Government, Langstane has been supporting homeless individuals to build communities and sustain their tenancies.  By appointing a dedicated homeless prevention officer, Langstane has been able to increase sustainment levels from 73% to 82% by helping support these individuals to become more integrated into their local communities.

Langstane has also been doing a lot of work to support their tenants through the cost-of-living crises, particularly around fuel support.  Many of their tenants are struggling to pay their fuel bills and some have had their fuel cut off.  The tenancy support workers at Langstane have working closely with these tenants, to help get their utilities switched back on and improve their living conditions.  Judith will share insights into the processes they adopted to ensure their tenants are supported and provide hints and tips about how you can consider similar approaches for your housing association.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at the conference.  You can see the full programme of speakers and workshops from the TPAS Annual Conference here.
