A New Deal for Tenants consultation

The Scottish Government are consulting on the draft A New Deal for Tenants – rented sector strategy, which seeks to improve accessibility, affordability choices and standards across the whole rented sector in Scotland.

If you are a tenant in any sector, anywhere in Scotland, this draft strategy from the Scottish Government is relevant to you. Highlights include seeking to put all tenants on an equal footing, protect tenant rights, establish a regulator to enforce standards, implement rent controls and set new standards for energy efiiciency and zero emmission heating.

The New Deal for Tenants draft strategy sets out an ambitious vision that by 2040 everyone living in Scotland would have access to a safe, warm, affordable, high quality and energy efficient home that meets their needs in the place they want to be, in a community they feel part of, and proud of, no matter their circumstances or where they live.

The Stratey is relevant for tenants in every sector – social housing, private rent, mid market rents urban and rural tenancies. It is important that tenants have a say, and you can find the draft strategy and the consultation questions at the following link:

You can respond to the whole draft strategy, or just to the questions that most interest you.

TPAS and TIS worked with Scottish Government in the autumn of 2021 to gather some initial feedback from tenants The feedback from our focus groups with mid market rent and agricultural / tied tenants can be found here [link to reports for download] and has informed some of the proposals being made. We look forward to assisting the Scottish Government to deliver more consultation events for private tenants over the next few weeks.
